Speakers and Topics include:Kelsey Davenport - Kelsey Davenport is the Director for Nonproliferation Policy at the Arms Control Association, where she focuses on the nuclear and missile programs in Iran and North Korea and on international efforts to prevent proliferation and nuclear terrorism. She reports on developments in these areas for Arms Control Today and runs the Arms Control Association’s project assessing the effectiveness of multilateral voluntary initiatives that contribute to nonproliferation efforts. She is the creator and lead author of the P4+1 and Iran Nuclear Deal Alert newsletter, which assesses developments related to the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, and the co-author of a series of seven reports assessing the impact of the Nuclear Security Summits on efforts to prevent nuclear terrorism. Kelsey joined the Arms Control Association in August 2011 as a Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellow. John Carlson - John Carlson joined the VCDNP as a Non-Resident Senior Fellow in July 2019. He holds a number of other appointments, including: Member and Senior Associate Fellow with the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, Member of the International Advisory Council of the International Luxembourg Forum, and Member of the International Verification Consultants Network at VERTIC. Mr. Carlson worked in the Australian Public Service from 1963 to 2010, principally on energy, nuclear and international relations issues, including 21 years as Director General of the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (1989-2010). Concurrent appointments included: Chairman of the IAEA Standing Advisory Group on Safeguards Implementation (SAGSI) from 2001 to 2006, Alternate Governor for Australia at the IAEA Board of Governors, Australian Sherpa to the Nuclear Security Summit in 2010, and founding Chair of the Asia-Pacific Safeguards Network. Mr. Carlson is a Fellow of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) and holds the national award of Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Olli Heinonen - IOlli Heinonen is a Distinguished Fellow with the Korea program and 38 North. He was Senior Advisor on Science and Nonproliferation at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, DC from 2015 to January 2020. From 2010 to July 2017, he was a senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Before joining the Belfer Center, Heinonen served for 27 years at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. He was the deputy director general of the IAEA, and head of its Department of Safeguards. Prior to that, he was director at the Agency’s various operational divisions, and an inspector, including at the IAEA’s overseas office in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to joining the IAEA, Heinonen was a senior research officer at the Technical Research Centre of Finland Reactor Laboratory, in charge of research and development related to nuclear waste solidification and disposal. Ali Vaez - Trained as a scientist, Vaez has more than a decade of experience in journalism. He has written widely on Iranian affairs and is a regular contributor to mainstream media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Atlantic, Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs. He is a frequent guest on CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera and NPR. Vaez was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University from 2008 to 2010 and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Geneva and a master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
